Reps Order Nationwide Ban on Porn Websites.
The House of Representatives has ordered the shutdown of all pornographic websites in Nigeria. It directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block access immediately.
Lawmakers made the decision during a plenary session on Tuesday. They insisted that internet providers must enforce the ban under the new directive.
Why the Ban?
The motion was sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, who represents Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa Federal Constituency. He argued that banning porn would protect societal values and prevent moral decay.
He explained that:
Pornography fuels adultery, prostitution, and addiction.
It changes people’s attitudes towards themselves and family.
Many religious countries have already banned it.
The House agreed with Tafoki and ordered its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance to oversee the implementation. They are expected to report back in four weeks.
Sanctions for Violators
Speaker Tajudeen Abass warned that any internet service provider that refuses to comply will face serious penalties.
Nigerians React
Not everyone supports the ban.
Comedian IGoSave strongly condemned the move. He argued that many Nigerians would be affected. He even suggested a protest against the decision.
On Instagram, he wrote:
“This porn site ban go affect many Nigerians o! Should we help dem protest? Cos they are true Nigerians too.”
Rapper Blaqbonez also reacted. He said the government should focus on bigger issues instead of blocking adult content.
