The Kogi State Government has intensified its fight against crime by providing an additional 10 refurbished operational vehicles to security agencies. These vehicles were handed over on Thursday in Lokoja to representatives of the Nigerian Army, Police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Support for Security Agencies
During the handover ceremony, Abdulraheem Ozovehe-Ohiare, Chairman of the Kogi State Security Trust Fund, emphasized the government’s commitment to equipping security agencies with the necessary tools to maintain peace and safety across the state. He expressed gratitude to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for ensuring the prompt release of funds, which enabled the refurbishment.
“Security is everybody’s business,” Ohiare said. “With the support of His Excellency, we are fulfilling our constitutional duty to provide logistics support to security agencies. Today’s presentation continues what we’ve been doing for a long time.”
Focus on the Nigerian Army
Ohiare highlighted a renewed focus on supporting the Nigerian Army, which received four refurbished vehicles. He promised further action to ensure all army operational vehicles in the state are roadworthy by January 2024.
“By the special grace of God, another four vehicles will be refurbished and handed over by the first week of December,” he assured.
Mechanisms for Accountability
To ensure proper use of the refurbished vehicles, the agency has implemented strict monitoring mechanisms. A dedicated committee comprising the Director of Administration, Publicity Secretary, and Internal Auditor will oversee the vehicles’ usage to prevent abuse.
Ohiare also warned criminals to steer clear of Kogi State, reiterating the administration’s zero-tolerance policy toward crime.
“Kogi is not a safe place for criminals. During the tenure of former Governor Yahaya Bello, they were dealt with, and the current administration is equally committed to securing lives and property.”
Stakeholders Applaud Efforts
Hon. Major Enefola, Chairman of the Kogi State House of Assembly Committee on Security, praised the agency for its proactive measures, expressing optimism that insecurity in the state will soon be eradicated.
“A desperate situation calls for desperate action. The people are happy with the agency’s efforts, and insecurity will soon become a thing of the past in Kogi State,” he said.
Representatives of the Nigerian Army also lauded the initiative. Major Garuba Mohammed, Head of Operation 12 Brigade, commended the agency’s efforts and assured residents that the army remains committed to eliminating criminal activities.
Kogi State NUJ Chairman, Comrade Ademu Seidu, also appreciated the agency’s work, calling for increased funding to sustain and enhance their operations.
Assurance of Peace and Safety
The refurbished vehicles are part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to support security operations and ensure that residents can live without fear. Ohiare reassured the people of Kogi State:
“We want our people to sleep with both eyes closed. Since acquiring new vehicles isn’t currently feasible, we are refurbishing existing ones to maintain security operations effectively.”
Conclusion: Strengthening Security Through Collaboration
The Kogi State Government’s provision of refurbished vehicles demonstrates its commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety of its citizens. With continued support from the state’s leadership, security agencies are better positioned to maintain law and order, making Kogi a safer place for everyone.
