Fiscal Federalism Must Proceed From Lagos - Soyiga
Prince Soyiga Samuel Adeshina

Some of us who are natives of Lagos State cannot be more proud of our state at this period when Lagos is leading at all front.

I have always appreciated our state Governor’s leadership skill but this week I must double the appreciation and also extend same to our wonderful state parliament, Lagos State House of Assembly for their concern for the entire citizens of Lagos.

How can we justify what the Federal Government returns to our state despite what it makes via VAT from our State, Lagos. That action is equivalent to robbery on the people of Lagos.

Politicians are not voted to be onlookers but must be accountable to the electorates who elected them with their trust and that is what the Governor, Lagos State House of Assembly and the Attorney-General of the state have shown us and we appreciate.

However, I want to appeal to the Government not to discard the position of Conference 57 on the equal sharing formula of 50 – 50 or even give more to the Local Government because they are the closest to the people.

HE Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu sir, we have always been a good example to other states even before you were elected as the Governor and I trust that you will sustain the model. It is sad that many Lagosians no longer care where their Local Government secretariat are located because they have been rendered almost useless due to paucity of funds.

Mr. Governor sir, Lagosians cannot continue to wait for the State Government to fix the roads on our street or depend on the State Government for security and welfare of Lagos citizens.

Mr Governor sir, it is no longer new that FISCAL FEDERALISM is the solution to many of our challenges but while the Federal Government needs to devolve power to the state, the state government must equally devolve power to the people, Local Government which will make me appeal for LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTONOMY.

Every kobo generated by the state government is from all these Local Governments, so it should not be hard to return what belongs to the people to the people.

As a former National President of National Association of Ikorodu Division Students, I communicated all Council Chairmen within Ikorodu Division to pay students Bursary but it may surprise you that only Ikorodu Local Government was able to pay up since the beginning of 2020 and others kept promising. The state need to give us reasons to hold our council chairmen accountable.

Our Local Government secretariat are not there for the sake of been there, they are constitutionally established.

Mr. Governor, give our Local Government the autonomy they deserves. Return the parks to them and take it away from NURTW or RTEAN.

I am hoping that our ever-listening Governor and our very active State House of Assembly will see this and work on it.

God bless Nigeria
God bless Lagos
God bless our Local Government
